The Epstein Barr virus that causes mono infects about half of all children before the age of five. Mononucleosis in children and babies may be asymptomatic or mild. It may be passed off as a cold or flu and not tested for.
When mono symptoms do appear in children, fever is common. Unless the fever is very high (above 40 degrees C), it should not be suppressed. Fever is the body’s way of killing off infection and stimulating the immune system. If a fever does rise too high it can put a child with mono at risk of febrile convulsions or seizures.
To lower a dangerously high fever, you can sponge the body with luke warm water, paying attention to under the armpits and groin where blood runs close to the surface. Alternatively place the child in a tepid bath. Do not use cold water as this can shock the body or induce shivering.
Aspirin should never be used to lower fever when treating mononucleosis in children. Aspirin has been associated with Reye’s syndrome – a potentially fatal illness which causes liver and brain inflammation. Aspirin is a particular risk in mononucleosis in children who are under 16.
Mononucleosis in children can cause the “Alice in Wonderland” syndrome, particularly when there is a high fever. This syndrome is characterized by the sufferer perceiving objects as the wrong size or shape and/or finding that perspective is wrong. For example body parts, people, cars, buildings, etc. look smaller or larger than they should be, or distances look incorrect. When I had mono as a child I still remember hallucinating that my fists would blow up in size like boxing gloves – it was quite a terrifying experience for a young child.
The other symptom which is common with mononucleosis in children is abdominal pain. The best approach here is to rest the body, eat lightly and apply a hot water bottle or heat pack to the abdomen. A warm bath can also help.
Mononucleosis in children may also exhibit as a viral rash. This is normally short-lived disappearing in a couple of days from onset. If the itch is itchy or causing discomfort then an oatmeal bath or application of calamine lotion can soothe the irritation.
As children reach the teenage years mono is more easily picked up since it is spread through saliva, often through kissing. A busy social life, pressure from studies, and relationship issues can all impact on immune health to increase the chances of picking up the virus.
Mono in teenagers and young adults tends to be more severe and prolonged than that seen in children. Symptoms like a sore throat, swollen glands, fatigue and fever are typical. The infection is normally self-limiting, resolving in a couple of weeks although some people suffer recurrent symptoms particularly fatigue for weeks or months after the initial infection.

When we wonder what guitar tab we need to get to begin to make up our repertoire, we usually think only about songs we like. We know that our choice in music does not suck in the slightest but if we are going to be playing our guitar and singing for audiences we need to get used to the idea that our taste in music will not match what our listeners want to hear. We may even take a look at popular choices in songs and get the uncomfortable feeling that we might have to play songs that we do not like. One thing guitar players are famous for is standing on their principles and not compromising on what they are going to play. The other thing they are famous for is giving the audience what they want. So a mixture of these two attitudes is probably going to form in your psyche as you peruse your list of guitar tabs on the internet. You already know what that is. That is why you do not bellow, “Hello darkness my old friend” or shirk on the enthusiasm when you sing the line, “Welcome to the Hotel California”.

Peripheral neuropathy, it’s causes and diagnosis have been covered so the question now is how do we take care of it? There have been advances in the treatment of diabetes but still approximately 60 to 70% of those with type 1 or type 2 diabetes will develop nerve damage. Prevention is the key to avoid this nerve damage. When the blood sugar is carefully under control, the nerve cells are bound to behave.
How do we prevent this condition other than keeping the blood sugar under control? Maintaining the blood sugar level within limits with insulin and diabetes medications can keep the nerve cells away from harm. In addition, a balanced diet that is rich in fiber along with exercise will help. A regular consultation with the doctor and a diabetes check-up every three months is advisable.
How is peripheral neuropathy treated? Although the nerves that have died cannot be restored, the right treatment will help ease the pain. The burning pain can be treated by the doctor with capsacin which is a topical ointment. If there is shooting pain or pins and needles, the doctor may prescribe antidepressants.
Stretching may help ease the distress when there is cramping or spasm. Wear well-fitted shoes and this means cowboy boots, high heels and others that constrict the muscles should be avoided. The doctor may advise taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen to relieve the pain.
If there is nerve damage in the stomach or what they call gastroparesis, often times, the doctor will prescribe metocloppramide because this helps empty the stomach. To help put a stop to urinary tract infection when there is nerve damage in the bladder, the doctor may prescribe bethanechol. This will also help in clearing the urine from the bladder.
If the peripheral neuropathy leads to erectile dysfunction (ED), a consultation with a diabetes specialist or a physician is the order of the day. He may prescribe Viagra or other options like the use of inflatable implants and vacuum erection devices. The significant other should be consulted before any treatment of ED.
Consult with a podiatrist or orthotist if there are symptoms of redness and swelling in the foot. While waiting for the foot to heal, the specialist may put a cast or splint to immobilize the foot. Protect the other foot with crutches or braces. Surgery may be an option for cases that are in advanced stages.
There are other things to do in order to cope with peripheral neuropathy.
* Do not smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol as they may make the nerve damage worse.
* Avoid using heating pads and electric blankets as you may not feel them and therefore burn yourself.
* Get the doctor to inspect your feet at every visit.
* Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes.
* Examine the feet and toes everyday for you may overlook the injuries.
* Never walk barefoot even at home.
* Schedule bathroom breaks every three to four hours even though you do not feel the need to go if you have bladder neuropathy.
* Do stretching exercise and walk regularly to ease the discomfort.
* Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fiber.
Now that we know this condition can be managed through occupational or physical therapy or through some form of orthopedic intervention, it is important to remember that good nutrition plus exercise like tai chi can replace traditional medications. Knowing all these is not enough though. The onus is on you to follow the recommendations of the multidisciplinary team and monitor their effects on peripheral neuropathy.

I am one of the 35,000,000 Americans who suffer from chronic sinusitis. I’ve looked at numerous potential sinusitis cures over the years and have undergone two painful sinus operations. I still was coming down with sinus infections after that, which was pretty discouraging, and I had to make lifestyle changes I wasn’t pleased with. Over the past four years or so I’ve found help using pulsating nasal irrigation with a saline solution, and the situation is relatively “under control”. I still get clogged up most nights, however, and have to take several medications, including a steroid spray.
Research has been done by the Mayo Clinic in the hope of finding new sinusitis cures. I’ve been in touch with one of the physicians on the Mayo Clinic research team who advised me that there is a new therapy which may actually treat the root cause of chronic sinusitis in many people. In this article I’ll summarize in layman’s terms the results of the research.
The research showed that people with chronic sinusitis have a different immune response in their nasal cavities to naturally occurring fungi, which they showed is present in the nasal cavities of almost everyone. The research team was able to demonstrate that in some people (chronic sinusitis sufferers) certain white blood cells, known as eosinophites, activate and thereby produce a chemical, called MBP, which causes damage to nasal membranes. Bacteria can then invade the damaged areas and cause sinus infections. It therefore made sense that an option in the search for new sinusitis cures would be to treat the fungus rather than treat the bacteria with an antibiotic, which is often the therapy followed conventionally.
Mayo Clinic studies have shown that 75% of chronic sinusitis sufferers saw improvement when treated with a topical fungicide. The Therapy is called topical antifungal therapy. An antifungal called Amphotericin B has already been approved by the FDA for other treatments and is normally administered to patients as an injection. For sinusitis cures it is made into a topical nasal spray and applied daily. The recommended dose is 100 micrograms/ml. This medication is generally not available in most pharmacies today. One must get the prescription filled through a compounding pharmacy such as Anazao.
The best thing to do is find a physician who is trained in administering this therapy, and that doctor can no doubt explain how to obtain the medication prescribed.
In some people the eosinophiles do not react to fungi present in the nasal mucus, and these people generally do not have chronic sinusitis. Why the eosinophiles act differently in different people is not yet known. Also, it is difficult to administer a test which will tell if one person has this type of reaction occur in his body or not. However, this theory would explain why some people are chronic sinusitis sufferers even after extensive conventional treatments or sinus operations. The conventional therapies and surgeries to date have simply not addressed this issue, since it was not known prior to the Mayo Clinic studies and patient tests.
Chronic sinusitis sufferers should be aware that this new therapy is available today in some locations, that it is gaining popularity, and it is becoming part of the arsenal of sinusitis cures available. People desperate for help should try to locate a physician who has been trained to administer this treatment and determine if it would help in their case. Many Veterans are hesitant to look at this option for fear of what might happen in the future. As always, there is no absolute right or wrong answer when analyzing a loan. The VA Hybrid loan might be the best thing in the world for one Veteran and the worst thing for another.
